Perspectives from choir members

Ambleside and District Choral Society rehearsal, 2023

David, Tenor

In the early 1980s we lived in Central London, where I sang in the tenor section of the Fulham & Hammersmith Choral Society. After we moved out to Surrey in the mid-1980s I joined an A-Capella choir, which I absolutely loved.

We moved to Ambleside 2016 and I immediately looked for a choir to join. I considered the ADCS but really wanted another A-Capella group, which I eventually found in Kendal’s, Fellside Singers.  To be honest, I was reluctant to join a choral society again, as I found it hard work!

In 2021 a very close friend died. Les was a magnificent musician, choral singer and soloist who had encouraged me in my choral singing days, and I had been to many of his concert performances. I saw the ADCS were to perform Handel’s Messiah at Christmas 2021 and, having sung it before, decided to sing in memory of Les. Just that once mind you.

Well, that went reasonably! My confidence and choral singing ability had improved since I last sang such music.  ADCS members were friendly, the standard of performance was high, and I didn’t feel out of place. So, I came back for more!  I still sing with Fellside too and wouldn’t give that up, but I love being part of Ambleside Choral Society!

Nicky, Soprano

Having lived abroad for many years we moved back to the UK permanently in 2007 and were based in Troutbeck and I was looking for new activities and hobbies. A choir member suggested ADCS in the pub one night.

I hadn’t sung in a choir for about 30 years having been musical at school and passing the audition for the University choir.

I joined as an alto and was immediately welcomed into the choir. Initially I had forgotten all about parts and reading music which seemed scary, but it very soon came back, and I was hooked. Later, I moved to soprano. I look forward to rehearsals with my choir buddies. Taking part in large works is hugely uplifting and I revel in the sound we make.  Being introduced to beautiful pieces and composers which I would not otherwise have enjoyed is an added bonus

What’s not to like?!

Stewart, Bass

I started singing at the age of eight when I joined the local church choir and have been singing ever since, with the church choir then at school and then wherever my work has taken me, in choirs of all types and sizes including a few combined performances of several choirs together – perhaps 300 or so voices.  I even joined a local church choir when I was stationed in Trinidad when in the Navy.

I retired to Grasmere in 1984 and on enquiring a friend suggested I joined Kendal South Choir which I did and sang with them until 2021 when unfortunately I found night driving impossible. Friends in Grasmere had several times suggested I join Ambleside and so I asked, am assured of a lift and so have been able to continue to enjoy singing with a very friendly and competent choir.
